Etymology: from or after F -ition or L -itio -itionis

a compound suffix of nouns, being -tion with a preceding original or formative vowel, or, in other words, a combination of -ite2 and -ion: expedition; extradition.

-ition, suffix
repr. F. -ition, L. -itiōnem, -ītiōnem, forming nouns of action from verbs with ppl. stem in -it- or īt-, as in position from posit-us, audition from audīt-us. It is really a case of the suffix -ion1, q.v. Instances occur of its non-etymological employment, as in acuition, acutition.
